Another Sports Writer Takes Backhanded Shot at Conservative Media Figure

Friday 3rd of September 2010 06:35:56 AM
Posted by admin / Under Sports Memorabilia

A trend that we’ve been following here at TFoP is sports writers, who are paid to write about sports, taking shots at politicians (usually conservative), and spouting their political views simply because they have a pulpit from which to speak. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but, sportswriters don’t have any more right than you or I to spout off political thoughts, and furthermore most don’t want to hear it. If I want politics I’ll turn on Fox News, CNN, or read Jake Tapper’s column. Enter Jonah Keri, a sportswriter at Bloomberg, and arguably one of my favorite baseball...

OAK BLUFFS — During last year’s Obama family vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, part-time island resident Tom Murro and his daughter, Lauren, got to meet the president at Farm Neck Golf Club. This year, Murro and his daughter are coming back to the Vineyard, to try to complete a long effort to present the president with a gift, to thank him for making the time to pose with them for photographs last year. “Gifting Obama isn’t easy” said Murro, who doesn’t want to chance damaging the gift—a photograph—by mailing it, and can’t figure out how to get it to the president....

A modern school where football is taught. Celebrity and entertainment correspondent Tom Murro says that baseball legend Yogi Berra has a unique gift for President Barack Obama. Yogi Berra, who now lives in Montclair, New Jersey is an 15-time All-Star and three-time winner of the American League’s Most Valuable Player award as a catcher for the New York Yankees. Sport in N.Korea Is Not for the Faint-Hearted In 1974, a popular North Korean actress named Woo In-hee was found unconscious in an exhaust-filled car after having an affair with a man who was born in Japan. The man died in the car but Woo survived and was forced to stand in front of a committee for an ideological criticism session. Rather than blaming herself, Woo revealed that she had been sleeping with high-ranking movie industry officials in return for top roles in films. She was executed by firing squad soon after. The ACC certainly gets kicked around when it comes to football, at least in the last couple of years. Some of it’s justified, when you consider how the conference is in the backyard of the SEC. Some of it is excessive. For example, there are several writers out there who get their jollies by linking to a picture of the half empty stadium in Jacksonville from the 2007 ACC Championship any time a story comes around about the conference title game. Get your shots in while you can, folks: you may not have the ACC to kick around much longer....

A Native American team forfeited their opening match of the men's lacrosse world championship on Thursday after being denied entry to Britain on tribal passports. The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) said in a statement that the 23 Iroquois players had been told they needed U.S. or Canadian documents to attend the two-week tournament in Manchester. The Iroquois, whose tribal ancestors are credited with inventing the game, say accepting such passports would be a blow against their national identity.

Belly-buttons key to success in sport: study

Friday 3rd of September 2010 06:35:56 AM

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Scientists have found the reason why blacks dominate on the running track and whites in the swimming pool: it's in their belly-buttons, a study published Monday shows. What's important is not whether an athlete has an innie or an outie but where his or her navel is in relation to the rest of the body, says the study published in the International Journal of Design and Nature and Ecodynamics. The navel is the center of gravity of the body, and given two runners or swimmers of the same height, one black and one white, "what matters is...

Want Economic Stimulus? Don't Build a Sports Stadium!

Friday 3rd of September 2010 06:35:56 AM
Posted by admin / Under Sports Memorabilia

For the last few decades sports teams across the country have nosed up to the public trough and demanded that states and cities chip in millions for the construction of new sports stadiums. To justify the public expense the claim has been made that these monstrous construction projects bring a wealth of jobs and spending on entertainment and are a boon to any city that will fund them. But are they? Do these multi-million dollar projects bring such lucrative benefits to the cities and states that pay through the nose for them? For many years the "economic boom" idea of...

While sports reporters have sought agents and teammates for the inside scoop on where NBA superstar free agent LeBron James will sign, there’s another person who may know The King’s next move: his accountant. In a July 1 blog post, the New York Post warned that “dysfunctional lawmakers in Albany” could cost the state a chance to bring the coveted athlete to New York. “If LeBron James goes to the Miami Heat instead of the [New York] Knicks, blame our dysfunctional lawmakers in Albany, who have saddled top-earning New Yorkers with the highest state and city income taxes in the...

Should LeBron James decide to play for the Knicks and pay the additional taxes to show his compassion and to show he's willing to give something back, which is what we demand of our athletes, or should he not sign with the New York Knicks or the Nets, sign with the Miami Heat and pocket and use the additional money for his own economic stimulus? What would you do if you were LeBron James and somebody was going to offer you in excess...
